Portrait Swap

This is the painting I did for a portrait swap sponsored by the Different Strokes blog.
I've never met this lovely lady; I just got a digital image from the swap organizer, Karen Jurick.

Here is my ref photo

I painted her in acrylics on canvas, 9 x 12"
As a landscape painter it was a real challenge - I worked on her features for hours. In the photo there is a cast shadow from the bill of the cap that I didnot include.

Update- Here it is! This is the portrait that was done by Sheila Thornton of me:

I sent Sheila this photo of me sitting at my desk.

I did a similar swap in 2006 on WetCanvas!
So, two portraits in two years :-)
Here's the portrait that Terry of WetCanvas did of me in 2006. He sent the finished painting to me and I love it!

Hi Kathleen! Thank you for your warm welcome. I like how you pushed yourself outside your comfort zone and did such a good job on your portrait. I admire your decision to leave out the cast shadow from her hat so we can see her pretty eyes. I'm looking forward to the start of a long friendship! hugs...

Is the elf pic supposed to be a joke? My 4 year old puts more effort into his coloring. Kind of a lame attempt in my opinion.

Beautiful portrait, Kathleen! I love the way you did her eyes. Also love the composition.

Hi Kathleen! This looks great! I agree with Akiko, beautiful composition and great work on the eyes. The photo was taken on the Seal Beach in San Diego.

Sorry you don't care much for my picture Matt. I was trying something different than my usual, with a cartoon/greeting card look. That's fine, everyone's entitled to their own opinions! Hope to do better next time!

Very cool Kathleen! I saw Karin's challenge mentioned in Southwest Art Magazine - what a fun endeavor. Beautiful work on the portrait! Thank you so much for sharing. Happy new year and happy painting in 2009.

Very nice job on your portrait! I think the edits you made were a good call. I completely understand what a change of pace a portrait is compared to painting a landscape.

BTW - Your ACEOs are beautiful!
