The Plein Air Painter

I'm really looking forward to getting outside again with my paints. This little piece will have to do for now as its cold and raining in Ohio. I posted this for sale on Daily Painters Marketplace today.

Sunny Afternoon

Four days of fantastic weather! You know you are a Ohio native if this makes you think, "Oh we're really going to pay for this!"

Over the weekend we saw a wonderful community theatre production of "Fiddler on the Roof" yesterday and the songs are still in my head. We got the patio furniture out and did some mulching. I had some time for painting too. This is an aceo that I listed on ebay here

I'm working on some larger paintings for upcoming shows. I have a barn painting that is giving me fits - trying to get that faded red barn color just right.

Diana

Well this was really a good exercise. It was a challenge and required me to go back to the basics of drawing. The photo of this statue was posted on the Different Strokes blog.

The camera vantage point is below Diana so she is up on a pedestal in more ways than one. I drew up a grid to try to keep our girl in proportion. Little discovery - her right breast and right knee cap are not nearly as far apart as you would think! Looking at this I see her right leg and knee are a bit wonky.
I used conte crayons and created a big mess (note to self: if you sketch sitting up in bed just use pencil) but it was fun - and more importantly, a valuable exercise.

Summer Cottages

This 8x8" painting was done with palette knife. There are places where the paint is thick. I love spreading the creamy thick paint and blending colors together on the canvas. This is gallery wrapped canvas with the colors extending around the sides. It is $75.00

Reminderville Art Show

We had a great time at the opening reception of the 3rd Annual Reminderville Art Show. This was the first year I participated and it was great. The show was so well organized and the folks were so friendly.
This was my entry- an 11x14 acrylic landscape called "The Landmark Tree"

Here's Lucy Karslake with one of her beautiful watercolors. Lucy won a Merit award for her still life.
The show included every kind of medium as well as three dimensional works. The show hangs in the Municipal Center in Reminderville through May 8th, 8:30 - 4:00 on weekdays and 9:00 - 4:00 on Saturday

Eggshell Land

This is exactly the kind of story I LOVE! Its about orginal folk art, unique and expressive.

Today's Plain Dealer is running a story about a local family who decorates their yard with thousands of colored eggs every Easter.

The Manolio family's "Eggshell Land" is now the subject of a documentary being shown at the Cleveland Film Festival. The film will be shown at the Cedar Lee at 7:00pm on Friday and Saturday.
I've found photos on Flicker and on Roadside America - check them out! Its an amazing display

Happy Easter

Its a busy weekend with lots of family visiting Ohio. Yesterday we went to visit little Jacob and it was such a joy to just sit and hold him. There is nothing like a snuggly newborn!
There was a "Welcome Baby" helium balloon floating around and the older boys decided that whoever was holding Jacob needed to have the balloon clipped onto their chair. I'm not sure if they meant it to serve as a bouy /marker of where their brother was or an honorary sign but they would come over every few minutes to check on him.

Just one little ACEO to post today

I did this ACEO by starting with an underpainting of red. The warmth shows thru the glazes of yellow and purple.

Texture Seaview I

I saw my palette knives sitting in a corner looking neglected and thought it was time to do some simple, thick - very thick paint applications. I find the process of painting with knife very relaxing and I love the finished look. This piece is 4x4" on gallery wrapped canvas, $50.00
