I just discovered the website picnik.. why didn't I know about this before?! What a fun place for editing photos. And they are shutting down. Being taken over by Google+. So if all that great software is incorporated into Google/Picassa, well I guess that's OK. I took a photo of a tiny painting of mine.. its about 1 x 2" or so and put it in a 'reflection' frame from Picnik. Endless possibilities.

Looking for spring...sigh... not here yet. So, inspired by my ACEO I painted an 8 x 10 - another pot of Pansies. I started with a ground of gold and glazed over it with green/gold among other things. I love these little flowers and have another on the easel - but that one has a different twist!

I'm wondering if any other artists are watching the Bravo TV show "Work of Art" ? This is the second season for the show and while I really enjoy seeing the process of creating art I'm usually baffled by the finished projects and how they qualify as 'art'. I suppose I just dont think outside the box enough. I do enjoy hearing the judges [Bill Powers, a New York Gallery owner and literary art contributor, Jerry Saltz, senior art critic for New York Magazine and world-renowned art auctioneer Simon de Pury ] comments and I wish we could hear more of their thought process.

When we think of fall the first thoughts of color are orange and reds. But October brings us wonderful lavenders and muted heather tones, shades of butterscotch and rust. It's such a pleasure driving in the country side - I dont even mind when the skies are pearly grays - Love all these soft cashmere colors.

This is 9x9" and it seemed like a good subject to close out the summer. The shell is old - my Aunt Katherine found it - when? the 30's? the 40s? I remember playing with it when I was little and it has been far inland, on the bookshelf in my house for many years. Some things just seem to last and last. The painting is at the Peninsula Art Academy now.

And this is my final entry in the Plein Air Competition in Peninsula. I painted at the banks of the Cuyahoga (video posted yeterday). I met so many wonderful people.... the girl from my hometown Yonkers, N.Y. and her friend from Peninsula, the man in the white hat, the nice little boy in the bike helmet and the couple with the black lab. Special thanks to Michael and my studio dog Casey for helping to carry and tote and just keep me company.
I saw some of the other entries and this promises to be a fabulous show at the Peninsula Art Academy. I'll keep you updated with info on the artists reception and the judging!

Plein Air Today!

Today I was in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park painting in the Plein Air competition. I chose to set up at the Log Cabin Gallery today... a beautiful log cabin in Peninsula looking down on the Cuyahoga River. There were musicians playing and the sun came out and there were so many great choices of subject matter.
I'm posting this slide show so you can see it all.

This morning I think I need to start the space heater under the desk. Its damp and chilly and I see it as a clear warning of whats to come. The other day I was in a discussion about ice-skating and I remembered my Dad taking us skating on the Bronx River. I remember the ice was bumpy and you could see all the leaves and twigs frozen under the surface and there was an arched bridge in the distance. And unlike the rink in Yonkers there were no walls to hang onto.

I painted this acrylic (not watercolor) for the September exhibit at the MD Garage. The theme is Farm Life and I thought I would add a touch of nostalgia to the piece.

This would be a great weekend to stop in at the MD Garage. Its an old gas station that has been converted into an art gallery and its located at the bottom of Boston Mills Road near Riverview Rd in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's open Saturday and Sunday from 10-4.

Summer is over and its time to return to cooler temperatures, eating indoors and close-toed shoes. This little painting sums up my feelings - heading back to shore after vacation days.

Still plenty of good times that are coming with the new season. There's a plein air paint out on the 24th and a clambake the following week. Football and pumpkins and lots more time to write on my blog!

The Barn That Would Not Die

This barn started out in life as a red barn. It didn't work. It use to have trees behind it. I got rid of them. The sky was a cold gray. I changed it. So here's where we are today.
Have you had paintings like this? They are just not quite right, or what you expected them to be so you tinker with it and worry about it and fuss with it. I'm at peace with my barn, at least for now.

American Pie

I loved this video so I wanted to share it with you.
This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a "dying city." Obviously the residents felt this was not so and set out to prove it.

The Grand Rapids LipDub Video was filmed May 22nd, with 5,000 people, and involved a major shutdown of downtown Grand Rapids, which was filled with marching bands, parades, weddings, motorcades, bridges on fire, and helicopter take offs. It is the largest and longest LipDub video, to date.

It's been a busy three days but I did complete a painting for the Daily Painters Challenge.

This is 8 x 8" - I do love the square format.
Saturday we stopped by the clubhouse at the Signature of Solon Country Club to see my painting that were included in the exhibit hosted by the MozArt Gallery of Aurora. The club is beautiful and all the art work just outstanding. It was great to visit with Stan and Alexis afterwards and see old friends.

Of course today was for remembering all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We went to the Hudson Memorial Day Parade and enjoyed what others made possible for us.

Hope your holiday weekend was wonderful. Maybe we'll see you at the band concert on the Green tonight?

This tidbit of information alone is priceless:

"Among his (the monk's) students were science majors, including a young Steve Jobs, who later co-founded Apple Computers and credits the calligraphy course for the typefaces Mac computers have."

5th Annual Reminderville Regional Art Show

April is a busy time for art shows! All the artists come forward with the work they have been doing through the long winter months. I have two pieces in the 5th Annual Reminderville Regional Art Show this year:

Last night I attended the opening reception of the Akron Women's Art League Spring Show. I'm a new member of the group and I've had the best time at the meetings and demos.And parties! Last night I was thrilled to discover that my painting "Grace's Vineyard" won first Place!

I painted this last summer, mostly from my imagination and named it after my Grand daughter Grace who was born that week.
And the icing on the cake was my second entry received an Honorable Mention.

"Piecing it All Together: The Art of Collage" opened at the Valley Art Center inChagrin Falls last Friday night. Its a wonderful show with pieces by some of the best collage artists around.

Here I am with Shirley Ende Saxe, Presicent of the Ohio Collage Society and Gretchen Bierbaum, President of the National Collage Society.

The Art Center has beautiful gallery space and Bridget Roush, Gallery Director did a fantastic job of organizing and hanging the show.

The coolest thing ever. A Zippo lighter. Back in the days when we were ignorant I had a Zippo (which I stole from my dad) and a silver cigarette case. Sigh. What more could you want?

Outsider Art Goes Mainstream

I really loved this movie. It fascinated me on so many levels. The mysterious Bansky, the lovable Thierry, aka "Mr. Brainwash" or MBW come together with a magnifying glass on modern art and marketing. Is it all true or all a big scam?
And now that the film has been nominated for an Academy Award will the mystery man himself attend? Will we see the hooded street artist rubbing elbows on the Red Carpet? Was he asked to stay away? Is this all just more hype? Stay tuned.....

Red roses to you, all my dear readers and art lovers.

We had such a good time at the February meeting of the Woman's Art League. After lunch Shirley Ende Saxe held a mini workshop on collage work and we all made Valentines. Shirley and Christine Parringer brought lots of material and we go to work.

This is my piece. It evolved and I think the story line is about heartbreak on the island of Martinique in the 1800s. You see she loved him so but he returned to France and her heart was broken. Or so I heard.

George Ferrell

In the early 70s my husband was a grad student at Emory University in Atlanta and I taught elementary school. We only had one car so I would stop by the Chemistry Department every day to pick up Pete. I would always be greeted by George, the building custodian. We'de get a cold "Co-cola" and visit and George would whittle while I waited for whatever experiment Pete was running to end.
George gave us one of his sculptures and I recently did some research to find out more about him and his work. I found this:

"George Ferrell was janitor for the Chemistry Building for many years. He was a most likeable man who became looked upon as a member of the family. An article in the May 1964 issue of the Alumni Magazine reported on his talents as a sculptor. "For his carvings he uses ordinary blocks of wood and he describes his methods as 'trying to see if you can do something interesting with an idea.' A wood carver, Ferrell has had no formal training in art. He has developed his style entirely on his own."

This is my original carving that George gave me so long ago.
I believe he used some good old red Georgia clay to secure her to a piece of granite (possibly some chunk from the old chemistry building itself?)

The article continues:

"In the March-April, 1970, issue of the Alumni Magazine there was another article about George entitled "Emory's Whittling Custodian.” It had a picture of George and said that it was estimated that he had completed about 1000 carvings in the last 15 years. It said that he recently had a one-man showing in the Candler Library and that he had had exhibits at local art shows including the spring outdoor art shows in Atlanta's Piedmont Park."

I would love to hear from anyone who knew George or could tell me more about his work.

Epiphany Art Show 2011

This year I entered two paintings into the Epiphany Festival. This one is 22x 28" and called "Easter Lily"

The Bath Church does such an excellent job of making everyone feel welcome and displaying the art work.

My second entry is large, 3' x 4', called "The Promise Land" it seemd like the perfect theme for this show.

This is a 16x20 abstract inspired by the idea of television. do you remember th days when you had to turn on the set before your show started to 'warm it up'? In fact do you remember the days when you turned the tv on and after your show you turned it off? Back when the television wasn't left on 24/7. Back in the day when you had to get up to turn the channel and when the knob broke you had a pliers ready to turn the dial. Back when there were rabbit ears that often had to have additional tin foil flaps wrapped around them. Sometimes you had to stand and hold the antenna in order to get a reception. And the tv was encased in a huge wooden console. Remember?

Well, I guess I'm missing an apple, some grapes, maybe a few berries. But this is a start. My oranges are singing in the morning light but the bananas are more subdued. they can be like that you know. No shine off that mellow yellow exterior.

So I had some onions in the pantry that were giving off that strong onion-y smell and so I did what every good artist would do... I painted them before throwing them out. (Acually they are still my my studio, growing stronger every day)I loved painting the long entwined green spouts.

I did two versions in two different palettes.

Yesterday we had 26" of beautiful Lake Effect Snow Sounds pretty doesn't it?
It is when you don't have to go outside. And yesterday I didn't since the road wasnt plowed and the driveway drifted over. So I stayed inside and painted - snow!

I haven't posted much to this blog lately but that doesnt mean I haven't been busy and painting a lot. We've been getting ready for the Holiday Gift Show at Peninsula Art Academy. First day I sold my large pointsettia painting (Clickback)! Timing is everything. I've been re-stocking some local stores that carry my small paintings and painting ornaments for sale and for gifts. Here are two miniature pieces I did this month. One was a commission based on an ACEO

Dad, finally home for Christmas 1946

This is my Dad, Francis John Shipman. I called him today to thank him for his service in the Army during World War II. He thanked me and said it was all a long time ago and he thinks that most people don't even know about it anymore.

Dad was in the 551st Field Artillery Unit as a Forward Observer. For the duration. To me that is a really big deal. But then he has always done exactly what was expected of him with no fuss or fanfare. Just like his dad did in World War I.

I am so proud to be his daughter and I thank him for all he has done for me and for our country.

This is my entry into the Ohio Collage Society Show in the Kirk Gallery at Tiffin University. My painting is 18 x 24" and incorporates paper and tissue as collaged elements. The title refers to the journey from the old world to the new.

Grande Dame

I am loving the play of warm and cool tones in this one. I used an orange prime coat when I started. Ha..warning! Look for more gray and yellow from me.
I called it Grand Dame since this one beautiful old tree dominates the countryside and everything else is there to support her. The scene is based on trees I have seen around here although it is not from one specific location. The painting is 9x12"

Hudson Ohio Photo Book

Its done! The community effort to produce a glossy, coffee table style book of photos of our town is now available.

Kristina Roegner, teamed up with Liz Murphy of the Learned Owl and Keith Curley of Western Reserve Systems Group, LLC to spearhead the project in early 2009.
I was so intrigued with this that I combed through my photos of Hudson and went out to take more. On a hot June day last year I took this photo at the Saturday morning Farmer's Market and submitted it - it was accepted!

This past Sunday afternoon there was a release party for the photographers and authors at the Learned Owl Book Store:

.... and it was a great party! A wonderful opportunity to see old friends and share stories. On the way out I couldn't resist snapping a photo of the view across the street from the Learned Owl - the side view of the Congregational Church as it is framed by two leafy trees..... maybe good for the sequel?

Isn't she a sweetie? Everyday on the way to work I pass a llama farm. These animals are so graceful and seem so intelligent. I painted this lady on canvas board 9x 12" and added a bit of colorful yarn to her harness.

I thought this palette was perfect for the last show of the year at the MD Garage. In addition to the ochres and violets there is a lot of bronze metallic mat paint used. i wanted to keep the edges very soft and the moody dreamy. The painting is 16x20"

Art Show in Twinsburg

This month I am exhibiting my paintings in the public library in Twinsburg, Ohio. I decided to make a large part of the exhibit about ACEOs. They were very well received - two sold while I was setting up the show!

Grandpa's Truck - Redux

The ACEO served as a model (no pun intended) for this larger version of an old, rusty but classic truck.
Its been in the same place for so long that the grass and vines grow over it and through it. I like the idea of soft foliage and hard metal together and will probably try similar scenes again. Maybe play up the texture of the rust....

This is a painting I did of my grandson Lucas on his third birthday. I painted it as gift for my son Matt for HIS birthday yesterday. I used photo refs of Lucas at his pirate themed birthday party last fall. Is painted on canvas 11x14 I find portraits a real challenge and struggle with flesh tones but when it looks right it is so rewarding!

Sketch Books

I have two or three sketch books lying about and lots of loose paper with snippets of ideas and compositions laid out. So when I first heard of the Sketchbook Project from Karen Koch I knew I had to try it. I've been involved in other national and international art exchanges including the Bakers Dozen collage swap but the idea of keeping one book with a purpose and a timeline attached intrigued me. I chose "I'm sorry that I forgot you" as my theme and paid out my $25 for a moleskin sketch book.

This is a mixed media piece I did for my granddaughter who will be one this week. The canvas is 12 x 24 and most of the image is painted. I collaged colored tissue in places, used raffia for the bow and stamped the letters on. I think she likes it!

We all know what that means - keep it simple stupid. I'm finding its especially true in painting. A simple composition, a simple palette, quick and decisive brush strokes are the keys to a fresh timeless painting. I kept this in mind while painting this garden pond scene and I'm pleased with the results.

I Wish I Had Met...

Samuel Bookatz. Unfortunately he passed away last year at the age of 99.
I had a conversation this week with Dick Kleinman at his Eton Square Gallery about local and regional artists and the artists that he represents. Dick said that he did represent Samuel Bookatz and was surprised that I had not heard of him. So you know as soon as I got home I was googling Mr Bookatz and came away in awe of his incredible life and prolific work.

There are a number of examples of his work at Dick Kleinman Fine Arts. It was written that Bookatz works “simultaneously on nearly a dozen different paintings at a time,(he)moves back and forth between different styles, media, and subjects as if they were all pieces of the same complicated puzzle." A man after my own heart. An 'everything painter'.

There is an obituary in the Washington Post that chronicles his amazing life story.

I had time to work out two 8x10s while at the marsh Sunday. Both are done with palette knife on canvas.
I had to leave all the paintings, varnished and framed at the Academy by 5:00 on Sunday. All the artists had fun comparing notes as they came in from the field and got their work ready for hanging I had to choose two to enter into judging. The other three will also be displayed. I must say that coming home without my paintings felt very strange... like coming home alone and leaving my new baby at the hospital! The competition will be judged by Larry Churski and the opening reception is June 26th. Hope to see you there!

Day 2

On Sunday we got started a little later in the day. Once again there were thunderstorms in the area. I knew I wanted to paint at the marsh.

I set up at edge (as far away from the poison ivy as possible) and close to the parking lot (well, there's lots to carry and the real possibility of a speedy exit being a necessity). I had decided to use a palette knife; partly for speed and partly to catch the rough gnarly feel of the marsh. the bull frogs were croaking and I painted.

I met lots of great folks who stopped to chat. At times the sun poked thru. It was a great day.

Day 1

I started painting about 9:30 Saturday morning with one eye on the storm clouds. The view is wonderful and I turned the easel so I could paint the northern view of the Cuyahoga.

This is the painting. It is 8x10"

There was still plenty of time so I started a 12x12 stretched canvas of the tree roots that were hanging over the edge of the bluff.

By 2:30 I was ready to clean the brushes. The clouds were dark and I got back to PAA just as the rain started in earnest.

Here I am painting at the back edge of the property behind 'Fire and Water', a great book store/coffee shop in Peninsula. The Cuyahoga River runs below my vantage point and the drop off is sudden and steep.I 'm painting the view of the river as the morning sun hits the water.

This is the front of the shop where owner Jeff makes coffee and bakery and everyone likes to stay and chat.

I was joined this morning my local artist Nicki Lanzi who also worked in acrylics.
